About Max's Fundraiser - SWB Maryland

It's Giving Tuesday!!! With the eyes of the sports world on soccer today, I wanted to take a minute to highlight the important work we are doing at Soccer Without Borders. I have worked with SWB for the last 1.5 years; our mission is to use the power of soccer, the world's universal language, to create positive change for individuals, families, communities, and the world. Soccer can mirror the world as it is, or it can change it for the better. At Soccer Without Borders, we choose change.

The global displacement crisis has reached levels unseen since World War 2. At the end of 2021, the total number of people worldwide who were forced to flee their homes due to conflicts, violence, fear of persecution and human rights violations was 89.3 million, more than double what it was a decade ago. In Maryland specifically, more than 4,000 individuals have arrived in 2022, more than the 4 previous years combined.

At Soccer Without Borders, I have seen tremendous change in the youth and communities we serve. The English Language Learner (ELL) population graduates high school at a 45% rate in Baltimore City. SWB participants have a 98% graduation rate since 2013. I see youth that grow in confidence, create community, strengthen academically, and lastly, improve on the soccer field.

With the World Cup as the background, today is the start of our Play It Forward campaign, our largest fundraiser of the year. If you are able to donate, please follow this link: https://soccerwithoutborders.soccerwithoutborders.org/playing-for-change-maryland/swb-maryland

If you are looking for other ways other than financial that you can get involved, reach out to me! As SWB Maryland's volunteer coordinator, I would be more than happy and willing to get you in touch with the right people.

I wanted to end with a quote from one of my middle school students, Bushra, about her growth in art and soccer since joining SWB: "In Afghanistan, I could not draw. But here I can go on Youtube and draw anything that I want and that makes me happy. In my country, the girls don't play soccer. This picture shows that girls can do everything."
